Blue Star Minis
We are a herd of five that lives right here at the heart of Blue Star, bringing year round delight to our guests. Only one of us in the herd knows first hand the origin story of how we all came to live at Blue Star.
Scotty was brought here as a rescue to keep company to someone we have come to know as a bit of a legend. Seeley was a handsome halflinger and a rescue who had worked hard most of his life taking hunters into the Bob Marshall wilderness. Sadly, he passed in April of 2024 at nearly 30 years of age. Scotty was quite heart broken to lose his best pal and since we are herd animals the only sensible thing to do was to grow the herd and provide sanctuary to more rescues.
You can read more about each of us down below.
Scotty
My name is Scotty and I will be 26 years old on June 9th. (I am a double Gemini, in fact with a stellium in Gemini, for those of you who might understand and appreciate such a factoid.)
My bloodline can be traced back to the 70s and I have been a stud much of my life. I don’t have the usual stallion attitude so when I was getting a bit depressed at my previous home due to being bullied, I was brought to Blue Star to keep Seeley company instead.
Since being here, my personality has been allowed to come out more. It turns out I am quite magical with a special relationship with trees and all things calm. I myself am a very loving and calm being, though you have to be patient and still enough to appeal to my quiet and observant side to get to know that. I love being groomed and it brings me great joy to have my herd around me.
Though I am a stallion it turns out I am not the alpha of the herd.
Betty
I am “Boss Betty”. My human servants believe me to be around 9 years old but my past is a bit unclear. They do think I am a taurus, judging by my temperament, but I don’t put much stock in such nonsense.
A few years ago, I found myself in a kill pen but was luckily rescued from there by a kind soul from Lakeside, Montana. It was always meant to be a temporary rescue where I had time to begin to heal from my past physical abuse. Luckily Blue Star needed more companions for Scotty so here I am.
I am not a fan of people capturing me or touching me unless they have carrots. I am slowly getting more comfortable with (very) short petting or grooming sessions but you will always know when I have had enough because I either walk away with my ears pinned back, attempt to nip to tell you to stop or, last warning(!), turn my hind quarters toward you.
What I am very good at, is being mother and herd leader.
Valentine
I am Valentine and I march to the beat of my own drum.
My history is also unclear but Betty and I got to know each other in the stressful situation in the kill pen. Thankfully, we both got to move to the picturesque northwest Montana and eventually landed here at Blue Star together.
My name came from the heart shape spot that is on my hind quarters and it does also describe my loving nature. Though I am still a bit reticent to be handled by humans, my heart and spirit are healing as I get to enjoy the beauty of the land at Blue Star without being asked to earn my keep.
I am a first time mother and aunt and it turns out I am very nurturing and playful.
Miracle
“I was born in the wagon of a travelin’ show…” No, not really.
So as it turns out, I was a surprise to the humans that apparently run this place. I was born April 25th, 2025 to Betty. The humans didn’t even realize my momma was pregnant - and from what I understand, this is not totally unheard of with minis.
I milk my cute blonde filly looks for all they’re worth but I am also faster than lightning! I am even practicing some moves to be an alpha mare but for some reason I am not taken very seriously.
Catkin
I was born June 17th, 2025 to Valentine. I immediately imprinted onto my human caretakers because I was a bit too small to find and latch onto mom’s teat, even though I had all the right moves and ideas about that just minutes after being born.
Because of that, I am obsessed with humans and I will stalk you for cuddles for as long as you allow it. I am also stubborn, smart as a whip and the spiciest one here.
Ever since I got here, I’ve known I wanted a job and my humans see that I have the courage, demeanor and desire to become a therapy horse. I’ve never been scared to experience new things and I am curious about everything.
And to be mentioned, I love horsing around with my half-sister.
In Memoriam, Seeley
My human fell in love with me when she first laid eyes on me and she referred to me as Fabio from time to time. Turns out I was as much of a clown as a ladies’ man and I frequently entertained the guests with my incessant neighing for attention and food.
Before Blue Star, I was in danger of being put down until I met my human, and arriving at Blue Star was a literal life saver. In my past, I had worked really hard in the back country and had some wild stories to share about my time there. One of the more exciting ones was when a bull moose came to camp at night. Apparently he was feeling itchy because he rubbed his antlers on my hind quarters. It seemed we had an understanding, so it was cool by me.
One other time I rescued a fellow pack horse from falling off a cliff on the trail, nearly falling off myself. Anyways, there are too many stories to share and it is now time for new adventures for me.
My humans loved me a lot and they seemed really sad when I had to leave them. I still visit my favorite spots in the sunny meadow from time to time and my humans can feel me in the breeze that gently blows through their hair.
